ABORIGINAL ARTEFACT DISCOVERY
SHARE

Aboriginal artefacts were uncovered on the Griffith Base Hospital Redevelopment site in May 2020 during archaeological investigations undertaken as part of the planning process for the redevelopment project.

An initial archaeological exploration located 271 stone artefacts in May 2020 and a subsequent salvage in December 2020 brought the total to over 3,000 artefacts.

This is a  signifcant cultural and archaeological discovery for the Aboriginal community and the history of Griffith.

The long-term management of the artefacts will be in accordance with the Care Agreement developed by Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council and Heritage NSW to ensure safekeeping.

The artefacts were handed over to the Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council at an event in March 2022.
